Dentures Q & A

What are dentures?

Dentures are artificial teeth. They restore your smile, make daily activities like chewing and biting easier and reduce the risk of oral health problems like gum recession and bone loss.

Dentures are made of tough materials like acrylic, nylon, or plastic. With regular maintenance and routine checkups, they often last for decades.

What are the types of dentures?

North Hawaii Dental LLC offers several types of dentures:

Partial dentures

Partial dentures look similar to an orthodontic retainer. They feature a wire framework, one (or several) artificial teeth, and pink plastic gums. The framework snaps into place around your existing permanent teeth, allowing for a secure, comfortable fit.

Complete dentures

Complete dentures replace an entire row of permanent teeth. They have a metallic, horseshoe-shaped base plate, pink nylon gums, and an arch of artificial teeth. To keep complete dentures from moving around, you apply a denture adhesive to the base.

Implant-supported dentures

Implant-supported dentures connect to dental implants, titanium posts that replace your natural tooth roots. Of all the denture types, implant-supported are the sturdiest and longest-lasting. They function like your normal teeth, so you don’t have to remove or soak them overnight.

What does getting dentures involve?

At North Hawaii Dental LLC, getting dentures takes at least two appointments and sometimes more.

First appointment

Before recommending dentures, your provider conducts an oral exam, reviews your dental health history, and asks about your goals. They also take digital X-rays to assess the condition of your teeth, gums, and jaw.

If your provider determines you qualify for dentures, they take impressions of your mouth. Then, they send your impressions to a dental laboratory that uses them to design and manufacture custom dentures.

If you decide to get implant-supported dentures, your provider administers a local anesthetic and places a series of titanium posts into your jaw. Then, they send you home with care instructions.

Second appointment

When the dental laboratory finishes your custom dentures, you return to North Hawaii Dental LLC. Your provider explains the process of wearing dentures and has you try them on. Then, they make adjustments as necessary and provide care instructions.

If you’re getting implant-supported dentures, you return to the office when the posts finish integrating with your bone. Your provider then takes impressions and sends them to a dental laboratory that designs and manufactures custom implant-supported dentures.

Third appointment

When the lab completes your implant-supported dentures, you return to North Hawaii Dental LLC for the final time. Your provider connects the dentures to your dental implants, polishes them, and provides aftercare instructions.
